Where Winds Meet: The Best 10 Sects Explained - Which to Join & Why
The launch of Where Winds Meet in North America and other countries has garnered substantial attention among those involved in the game community. One of the topics discussed by new players is the nine playable classes (or "Sects") offered within Where Winds Meet; they are essentially the same as Classes, Guilds, or Moral Alignments found in other MMOs. The difference lies within each Sect itself, due to the numerous combat styles available as well as the various methods you interact with the World, the Open World itself, and the various Factions.
Currently, we have a total of eleven available Sects, with eight available at launch and the other three to be released at a later date. Many new players may not know which Sect they should start with. To help new players decide which Sects they would like to join, we have created this article to give you a breakdown of the top ten Sects, explain each one's main characteristics, and which players would be most suited to join each Sect.

Well of Heaven - Justice-Driven Fighters
The Well of Heaven is a classic HEROES of our time. It is the path that proves to be more heroic than wealth, and fighting for justice does not require breaking the law. As a member of this faction, you will receive an additional weapon called the Thundercry Blade, which allows for an easy-to-learn melee combat style.
Members can also share their wealth with others by sending red envelopes, which are, in effect, like giving someone real currency. However, there are several rules associated with this activity, including no harming fellow members, no excessive earning, and ultimately, having a good time while playing with honour. This is a great place to start if you wish to identify with being a hero or just want to fight effectively with a sword.
Silver Needle - The Healer’s Haven
The Silver Needle, led by Dr Sun Yuan, is the present focus of the Healing community. It is where you will find the most expertise on Support, as well as some of the most elegant and beautiful weapons in combat (the fan). The members of the Silver Needle specialise in medicine and healing, with the ability to heal the ailments of NPCs in the same manner as the NPCs do; in addition, they craft some of the best healing items currently available in-game.
Those wishing to become healers must remain active in social networking and earn Likes from their peers, while also participating in group healing events. For those individuals who enjoy being a part of a team and assisting their teammates as a Medic, the Silver Needle is unrivalled.
Raging Tides - Drunken Spearmen
Raging Tides is a sect that offers players an unconventional and chaotic style of combat that utilises drunkenness as a means of enhancement. Members of the Raging Tides fight with spears and get stronger while under the influence of alcohol, whereas fighting when sober will lead to penalties against members. The emphasis placed on sharpening their weapons daily, along with maintaining a warrior's discipline, is significantly different from the alcohol-fueled combat identity that the Raging Tides embraces.
The Raging Tides are currently locked due to story developments, but it is anticipated that they will be unlocked in the not-too-distant future. Players who enjoy high-risk/high-reward gameplay and those who enjoy using spears will be able to find a niche within the Raging Tides' chaotic nature.
Midnight Blades - PvP Assassins
The Midnight Blades are a sect that focuses on PvP assassins and player killers. They are led by "Lost in Thought," whose identity is shrouded in mystery, and they thrive upon completing bounties and taking out wandering players in open-world PvP. Members of the Midnight Blades utilise the Infernal Twinblades, and the way to gain experience is by killing players of a higher rank. This creates a very brutal internal advancement ladder.
The rules of the Midnight Blades revolve around gaining karma through kills, sparing no one, and hunting within the "Perception Forest." The Midnight Blades are the perfect choice for players who are interested in competitive PvP.
Nine Mortal Ways - Tricksters and Pranksters
`Nine Mortal Ways describes a playful side of mortal existence through the use of humour, deception, and the camouflage of costumes to create pranks on other players, as well as interaction with the use of trickery and lies. | The Nine Mortal Ways also uses the Mortal Robe Dart (which represents a playful means of defeating an opponent) to add to the fun and enterprising activities of the players of this faction.
Anyone who is familiar with interactive gaming and enjoys doing something silly or mischievous will find this faction very entertaining, as players earn "fun points" by performing successful tricks and lose their rank or are imprisoned for performing unsuccessful tricks.
Velvet Shade - Romance and Elegance
Velvet Shade is another emerging faction celebrating love and beauty through windows of charm and multiple relationships; the Velvet Shade faction highlights the elegance and emotional connection with its players through a unique weapon called "Ninefold Umbrella". Players may join this faction if they can maintain an elegant presence in all of their activities, and the faction encourages players to create a community of friendship and love by exchanging affection.
As this faction is not yet available, it has received a positive response from players who enjoy the role of relationships and elegant styles of combat.
Masked Troupe - Performers and Artists
The Mystifying Society (also called the "Hidden Order") is a sect of artists and performers that embraces any type of performer, such as dancers/musicians, etc. This group believes in creating authentic artwork, maintaining simplicity, artistic expression and gracefulness. While the combat style for this sect is probably not known yet, members of the sect anticipate a combat system based on rhythm and elegance.
Lone Cloud - Scholars and Strategists
The Lonesome Scholar is an organisation that caters to puzzle-solvers and tactical thinkers. Members of this group will be interested in logic-style riddles, loyalty and using a Strategic Sword as a primary weapon. To be considered for membership, applicants will have to complete Intelligence Tests in order to qualify. Also, members are supposed to maintain faithful romantic partnerships throughout their playing time; therefore, members who do not maintain their partnership will receive penalties. The game will likely appeal to the slow-paced, thoughtful type of player once released.
Hollow Vale - Morbid Healers and Poison Masters
The Hollow Vale sect is one of the darkest groups in our worldview. Hollow Vale is based on the concept of balancing the scales of life and death. Members must balance every life they heal with a life they poison to maintain their dual roles as healers and poison masters. If a member breaks this balance, he/ she will be seriously harmed in the game. Because this group lives within ancient tombs, Hollow Vale is very much suited for the type of character that enjoys necromancer-type gameplay, as well as the more meaningful and tragic storytelling found in the Hollow Vale sect.
Inkbound Order - Scholars of Law
The Inkbound Order is a group of people founded by Lin Xiansheng to promote Law, Scholarship and Justice, as well as to provide a way for their members to eventually be able to create/contribute to the bounties that will apply to all players across the globe. The Order does not have an idea of what their complete combat style is or what all the rules are. However, from what the Order's title implies, it appears that it is specifically for those who wish to play a lawful character.
