Core Attack Mechanics
The combat system in Where Winds Meet depends on the tools you have. To put it simply, you will have the basic attack options and then varied ones based on the weapon you are wielding, and then you have different Martial Art Skills to merge with your basic attacks. Your toolkit mainly revolves around left-click for light attacks and right-click for Heavy Attacks; however, these also vary depending on the weapon in your hands.
Your attack mechanics are also influenced by Mystic Skills, which can be referred to as the skills you learn while exploring the outer world. You can have up to 4 active mystic skills at once.
You can also switch weapons while fighting, and this is done more easily than you think. You don’t need to go through the lengthy process of “Open the inventory and blah blah blah”. Just pressing Tab allows you to swap your weapons while fighting.
Defense Core Mechanics
It is quite obvious that even if you are the JohnCena of Where Winds Meet, you can’t just keep attacking your enemies forever. Your enemies will also get the chance to channel their powers and attack you, and then you will have to defend. There are three ways in which you can defend yourselves in a fight, and it is to be noted that your defense mechanisms will change, depending on the enemy.
1.Blocking
Now this is the basic defense. While it does lower the incoming damage, it doesn’t erase it fully. This method is only useful against small enemies. But if you try blocking against a serious boss, well, just be prepared to get blown away. Don’t blame me, I warned you.
2.Dodging
This is one of the better forms of Blocking. If you perform a dodge at the right time, then it will give you invincibility frames during the animation, completely eliminating the damage. And not only this, Purrrrrfectttt dodges give you time dilation effects, which means you can easily reposition during the fight. Though this effect won’t aid you in PvP or greater difficulties.
3.Parrying
Okay, now we have learnt blocking and even dodging, but what about the next attack after you have dodged? Well, buddy, here it is. We present you parrying, one of the most crucial defense methods, and if done correctly, it triggers devastating counterattacks that deal enough damage to make even the Elite bosses stagger. Parrying is most useful when the boss tries to execute a multi-hit combo because just one successful parry and the entire drama of the boss goes to waste, saving your neck. Parrying is also known as Deflection.
If you feel that the game is too fast-paced for you to execute a Parry, then you can always use the Assist Deflection feature, which allows you to slow down the time and get the exact moment to perform a successful deflection. However, using this function requires Insight points.
The Three Bars
What? You thought I was talking about iron or chocolate bars? No, buddy. While chocolate bars can only give you rotten teeth and diabetes, these bars can get you killed,… in the game. In your Heads-up Display (HUD), the biggest bar you see is the health bar, which is followed by the Qi bar and then the Insight Points bar.
The Health bar gets depleted when you get damaged and suffer from injuries. You can heal yourself with medicine, which is shown on the left of your Art skills. You can also see which exact medicine you are using and the amount you have on your hands.
The Qi bar is under the Health bar, and it determines your capability to dodge, block, or parry the attacks. This bar replenishes when you stop blocking, or just attack, or just… stand still. (I don’t recommend doing the last thing in a boss fight.) In short, the Qi bar represents your Stamina.
The Insight Point Bar isn’t usually visible unless you decide to use the Assist Deflection feature. This bar is split into sections, and one section depletes when you use the Deflection once. This bar automatically replenishes over time.
Techniques
Combat in Where Winds Meet isn’t all about what the game offers. It is often about bending the mechanics to your advantage. And for this, you can follow the techniques listed below:
Have the Patience
You know what they say? Patience is the darkest side of Power. Just follow the same concept in the game. When you see the execute prompt appear, have some patience and wait until it is almost one second remaining, and then trigger it. This maximizes the damage output just before the finisher move.
Cancelling the Animations
If you press the parry button during a skill animation, it immediately cancels it. This provides opportunities to extend your combos and defensive reactions. As simple as it may sound, this little technique can determine your victory.

Conclusion
While learning combat can be quite complicated and tiresome in the beginning due to the brief introductions and having a hard time just finding the menu and other stuff, it eventually gets easier when you get the overall hang of it. It's all about doing things your own way. You don’t like simple swords and prefer CLANK CLANK over clink clink? Go for Greatswords. You like being fast like Flash? Use Dual Blades. You don’t like close-ranged fights with annoying mobs? Well, hit 'em in the back with your flaming arrows. Everything is possible when you take it simply; complicating things can only give you a headache.
