Beginners' Guide: How to Use StarDesk Remote Desktop

Quick Start (2 minutes)

1. Download StarDesk on both devices

Go to stardesk.net and download StarDesk on every device you plan to use (PC/Mac as the host; phone/tablet/another PC as the client).

2. Install and log in (client first)

Complete the setup wizard on your client device and sign in with your Google account.

Host vs. Client (What to use where)

  • Host: The powerful computer you want to control (gaming PC or work Mac/PC).
  • Client: The device in your hands (iPhone/Android/another PC) that you use to control the host.

First-Time Permissions (important)

  • Windows host: Allow StarDesk through Windows Firewall on first run.
  • macOS host: Grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  • iOS/Android client: Allow any prompts for Local Network, Bluetooth/controller, or notifications as needed.

Using StarDesk Day-to-Day

  • Launch & connect: Open StarDesk on the client → select your host → Connect.
  • Game controllers: Pair a Bluetooth/USB gamepad; StarDesk supports controller input where your game does.
  • Key-mapping (mobile): Turn on on-screen controls and customize buttons for your favorite games.
  • File transfer: Use the in-app file panel to send/receive files between host and client quickly.
  • Resolution & quality: Start with 1080p/60 for speed; bump to 1440p/4K on strong networks.
  • Multi-monitor: Choose which monitor to view or switch on the fly (if supported on your setup).

Network Tips for Low Latency

  • Host: Wired Ethernet > Wi-Fi.
  • Client: Prefer 5 GHz/Wi-Fi 6 or strong 5G/LTE.
  • Close bandwidth-heavy apps (cloud backups/streams) during play.

Troubleshooting

  • Host not showing up: Ensure both devices are logged into the same account and StarDesk is running on the host; check firewall/permissions.
  • Stutters/lag: Lower bitrate/resolution; move closer to the router; use Ethernet on the host.

FAQs

Is StarDesk ready or in beta?

StarDesk is in Free Early Access (public beta)—stable for daily use, with features rolling out continuously.

Do you have a handheld gaming launcher?

There isn’t a separate launcher yet. Use your normal game launchers (Steam/Epic/etc.). StarDesk supports controllers and custom on-screen controls for handheld/mobile play.

Does StarDesk support controlling a Mac (macOS as the host)?

Not yet. macOS host control is in active development and we’re targeting release by the end of this year. In the meantime, you can use a Mac as a client to control a Windows PC.

Conclusion

Ready to try it? Download StarDesk, connect in one tap, and enjoy low-latency remote control across devices.
