You can pull one off by taking a photo at the exact last moment before your character is attacked.

You’ll know when you can get the Fatal Frame shot when you see the camera lens glow bright red as the enemy lunges towards you. Once you’ve hit the Fatal Frame shot, you’ll knock the ghost back, preventing them from actually hitting you.

Not only do you stop yourself from getting hit, but you’ll also get a few seconds where you can take as many photos as you can without having to wait for it to reload. Those two elements combined make the Fatal Frame shot the most effective move in the game, as you keep yourself from getting damaged and open up your enemies to as many camera shots as you can pull off. The best tactic in the game for defeating enemies is to wait for them to try and attack, hit them with a Fatal Frame and then take as many photos as you can.

Depending on the composition of the photo, you’ll also get a higher Fatal Frame multiplier. This number will tell you how long you have to take as many photos as possible before the Camera Obscura goes back to normal and needs time to recharge. You can make this number bigger by taking a better photo as the Fatal Frame.

Because you’ll be relying on the enemy jumping towards you, it can be difficult to keep them fully in shot for the Fatal Frame. To negate this issue, try and keep walking backwards as you’re aiming at them and learn each enemy’s attack pattern. You'll also get red arrows around the Camera Obscura lens to show you where a ghost is, which can help if it tends to move around a lot. Most of them simply lunge forward and make it very clear when they’re about to hit you, but a few have trickier moves.

If you’re worried about getting hit whilst trying to take Fatal Frames, don’t be. After the first few drops (the name for chapters in Project Zero) you’ll be taught how to dodge an enemy’s attack. With this move, if you fail a Fatal Frame or back out at the last second, you’re given a massive window of time to be able to dodge the ghost and be given another shot at photographing them.
