About the Game

New Eridu stands alone. Every other city has been consumed by a phenomenon the world calls the Hollows, a spreading spatial catastrophe that warps environments, breeds monsters, and guards pockets of irreplaceable resources within its chaotic depths. New Eridu survived because it cracked the code, developing the technology and expertise needed to coexist with this ever-present threat. The city thrives on that edge, and so do the people who call it home.
At the center of this world is the Proxy, the role players inhabit in Zenless Zone Zero. A Proxy is not a soldier or a politician; they are a specialist guide who can read the Hollows and lead others through them safely. Operating out of a small video store called Random Play, you serve clients from every corner of New Eridu's fractured society. Wealthy tycoons need resources. Street gangs need leverage. Officials with hidden agendas need deniability. Everyone needs a Proxy, and that makes you indispensable.
The factions you interact with are as varied as the city itself:
Powerful corporate interests that control the flow of Ether resources extracted from the Hollows
Underground gangs that run New Eridu's streets with their own codes and hierarchies
Shadowy figures operating outside any official structure
City officials whose public faces rarely match their private objectives
Each faction brings its own agents into your orbit. These are the characters you build relationships with and deploy in combat, and their individual stories are woven into the larger narrative of what New Eridu actually is beneath its glittering surface.
Combat in Zenless Zone Zero is built around a three-character squad that players assemble and customize. Battles unfold in real time, demanding active engagement rather than passive stat management. The core loop revolves around Basic Attacks and Special Attacks, but the system deepens considerably through its defensive mechanics. Dodging at the right moment and landing well-timed Parries neutralize enemy counterattacks and create openings. When an opponent is Stunned, the window opens for Chain Attacks, a sequence of coordinated strikes from your squad that represents the highest damage output available. Enemies are not interchangeable targets; each type carries distinct traits, and building a squad that can exploit those weaknesses is the difference between a clean run and a costly struggle.
The presentation surrounding all of this is deliberate and distinctive. Zenless Zone Zero does not aim for photorealism. Its visual identity is rooted in a specific aesthetic that feels like a stylized urban graphic novel brought into three dimensions. Character expressions are carefully animated, movements are fluid enough to carry personality, and the environments shift in feel as you move between the neon-lit streets of New Eridu and the unsettling geometry of the Hollows. The soundtrack follows the same philosophy, blending genres to match each moment rather than defaulting to a single tone.
Progression is tied both to combat mastery and to the relationships you build. Characters recruited through your Proxy work are not simply units on a roster. They carry their own histories, and spending time with them through the game's story content develops those bonds in ways that feed back into how the world of New Eridu unfolds around you. The city is populated with stories, and finding them requires curiosity as much as combat skill.
