About the Game
Hundred Scenes of the South of the Yangtze River invites players into a lovingly reconstructed vision of Ming Dynasty China, where a legendary scroll painting serves as both the setting and the soul of the entire game. Developed by Coconut Island Games, this ancient-style simulation title blends city building, story exploration, and historical atmosphere into a single cohesive experience that stands apart from conventional mobile games in the genre.
The story begins with a gifted scholar named Wen Zhengming, who discovers a mysterious remnant painting at an antique stall during the height of the Ming Dynasty. Believing it to be a relic from earlier times, he takes it home only to find that the scroll has no beginning and no end. Stranger still, the landscapes of Jiangnan can be drawn into it, and the figures painted within it come alive. He eventually concludes that the painting is a creation of Nuwa herself, a divine relic, and dedicates the rest of his life to filling its pages with the scenes of Jiangnan. He never completes it. After his death, he transforms into a guardian spirit to watch over the scroll from within.
For generations the painting passes through different hands, growing more detailed as hundreds of artists add their strokes to it. But when the powerful official Dong Qichang seizes the scroll and locks it away, its fate darkens. During the chaos of the Wanli era, a fire tears through the Dong family estate and ravages the world contained within the painting. Three days of flames reduce the thriving town of Yingtian Mansion to ruins. Wen Zhengming, awakened by the destruction, reaches out to the player with a single request: help rebuild what was lost, one building at a time.
This is where the gameplay begins, and it opens up into a surprisingly deep city-building simulation:
- Start from a modest plot of farmland and gradually expand into a full commercial and residential hub
- Design your city layout freely, placing buildings wherever you choose to maximize prosperity and visual harmony
- Manage the daily lives of your residents, keeping them safe from troublemakers and helping them thrive
- Develop freight and trade routes that connect your growing settlement to the broader Jiangnan world
- Unlock exclusive buildings unique to each city, reflecting the distinct regional character of different water towns
The art direction is one of the most immediately striking things about the game. Every visual element is rooted in the Wu school of landscape painting, a tradition known for its refined brushwork, quiet elegance, and deep sense of natural harmony. Buildings are not invented but faithfully drawn from actual Ming Dynasty references, giving the environments a historical weight that few mobile games attempt. The result is something that feels more like stepping inside a living scroll than navigating a typical city-building interface.
Beyond construction and management, the game offers a layered narrative experience. Players encounter historical figures whose emotions and stories unfold through dialogue and events. The customs of Jiangnan life, seasonal rhythms, the sounds of oars on water, lanterns at dusk, are woven into the moment-to-moment flow of the game. There is also a free exploration mode that encourages players to wander beyond the main story, discover unusual events, and satisfy their curiosity about the world hidden within the painting.
For anyone drawn to simulation games that emphasize atmosphere and creative expression alongside resource management, Hundred Scenes of the South of the Yangtze River offers something genuinely distinctive. It treats its historical setting with care and uses its fictional framework to explore real cultural heritage in an accessible and engaging way. The combination of strategic city planning, rich storytelling, and painterly visuals makes it a game worth settling into slowly, taking the time to appreciate both the world being rebuilt and the history behind it.
