About the Game

How Many Dudes? is a strategy roguelike from Butterscotch Shenanigans that challenges you to assemble an ever-growing army and push it to its limits through escalating waves of increasingly absurd enemies. At its core, the game is about experimentation. You pick Dudes, layer abilities on top of them, and watch as your carefully constructed team either dominates the battlefield or falls apart in spectacular fashion. The satisfaction comes from finding those rare combinations that turn your squad into something completely unstoppable.
Your roster draws from six distinct Dude Families: Undead, Employed, Warrior, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Action. Each family brings a different tactical identity to the table, and mixing them is where the real creativity begins. With 42 unique Dude Types available and more than 850,000 possible team configurations, the game hands you an enormous playground to explore. You might field Zombie Dudes that detonate on contact, Ninja Dudes that unleash volleys of Shurikens, or Cowboy Dudes that rope allies out of harm's way. No two teams play the same.
Building your roster is only part of the equation. The game layers in two additional systems that reshape every run:
Relics: Hundreds of collectible items that modify how individual Dude Types behave in battle. A Relic might cause your Wizard Dudes to hurl fireballs whenever they reposition, push your Ninja Dudes into stealth mode when they take damage, or set up your Finance Dudes to profit off fallen allies through a life insurance scheme.
Trinkets: Powerful items earned by defeating Act Bosses. Each Trinket is assigned to a specific Dude Type and opens up strategies that would otherwise be impossible. The choices can be delightfully strange, like wiring your Wizard Dudes with ADHD or equipping your Samurai Dudes with a Taser.
Enemy variety scales throughout your run, starting with manageable threats and climbing toward wolves, gorillas, and eventually gods. Boss encounters are designed to stress-test whatever synergy you have been cultivating, and clearing them rewards Silver and Gold stars tied to specific Dudes. Collecting stars across your roster gives long-term goals that keep each session feeling meaningful beyond just surviving.
Replay value comes from multiple directions. The Daily Dude offers a shared challenge that refreshes regularly, giving you a consistent puzzle to solve alongside the wider player base. Ensemble Mode lets you pre-select your dream lineup before a run begins, which is useful when you want to stress-test a specific combo or work toward mastering a particular Dude family. Three tiers of difficulty introduce new enemies and boss types, so the game continues to challenge you well after you have cleared the baseline content.
Every run through How Many Dudes? feels like a new opportunity to stumble onto something broken in the best possible way. The combination of deep roster building, layered item systems, and unpredictable enemy scaling means there is always another synergy waiting to be discovered, another boss to outlast, and another ridiculous team composition worth trying.
