About the Game

Kyoto Rule is a survival adventure about the gap between what people say and what they actually mean. You move from Tokyo to Kyoto, and from your first moving in greetings in April to the final judgment in March of the following year, you have to last 365 days inside a social code where politeness can hide a polite request for you to leave. Developer SNAPLACE builds the whole experience around one daily question, four possible replies, and a translator who exposes the true feeling behind each comment. How the daily loop works
Each day a Kyoto local speaks to you, and you choose one of four responses. All four look polite on the surface, and the options are rearranged every time, so you cannot memorize a pattern. After you choose, the Nasty Translator tells you what the person really meant. A tea ceremony teacher asking if you would like bubuzuke might actually be saying, go home, go home right now. If you read the room correctly, your likeability goes up. If you misread it, your likeability goes down.
Humility is not a safe answer
The game refuses to let you hide behind constant self effacement. Refusing genuine kindness over and over is treated as rude in this fictional Kyoto. There are 48 days a year when simply accepting what is offered is the correct choice. On the 24th, the only right answer is to stay silent and say nothing at all. There is no single day where you can win without actually reading the situation.
Ten neighbors are watching
Your neighborhood has ten key figures, including the neighbor's wife, the neighborhood association chairman, the fan making elder, and the greengrocer's owner. Each one has a separate favorability score, and your monthly judgment is based on their average. If even one person loses interest in you, you are sent home on the spot. A major slip of the tongue spreads through the neighborhood, and a few days later a completely different person will bring it up with a casual, by the way, I heard about that. On the other hand, five consecutive days of good perception earn you a strong reputation and can even promote the person who was in the worst mood.
The bar rises every month
Your favorability rating gets harder to raise the higher it goes. The city center is far away, and the passing line becomes stricter the longer you stay. April might pass with 40 points, but March demands 85 points. There are no excuses, and no way to coast on early success.
A full year of seasonal pressure
The calendar is packed with events that each carry their own hidden malice: Aoi Festival, Minazuki, Gion Festival, Gozan Okuribi, Jizo Bon, Jidai Matsuri, autumn leaves and tourists, year end gifts, the first Kyoto New Year, Setsubun and the biting cold, and finally the judgment on your first year as a resident. Every season changes the tone of the conversations and the traps inside them.
Certificates and sharing
At the end of each month, your result becomes a certificate. It tells you whether you are approved or deported, and it records exactly who has lost patience with you. You can take a screenshot and post it directly, which turns each month into a small public record of your social survival.

The 30 days of April are free to play indefinitely. The remaining 11 months, 335 days in total, unlock with a one time purchase of 300 yen.
