About the Game

Spirit Island places you in the role of an ancient elemental force defending a living island from colonial expansion. Set in an alternate version of the early 18th century, the game imagines a world where European powers have pushed into territory that still holds genuine magical power. Rather than playing as the colonizers, you embody the Spirits of the land itself, working alongside the indigenous Dahan to push back Invaders who are spreading settlements, ravaging the terrain, and unleashing blight with every passing turn. It is a cooperative experience through and through, demanding coordination, forward planning, and a deep understanding of how each Spirit's abilities interact with the unfolding threat.
What sets Spirit Island apart from many strategy games is the asymmetry at its core. Each Spirit plays differently, with its own starting position on the island, its own set of innate powers, and its own growth options that evolve as the game progresses. The power system is built around two card pools. Minor Power cards, 36 in total, offer flexible enhancements that can be woven into a Spirit's existing strategy. Major Power cards, 22 in all, hit harder and create dramatic swings in board state but come with trade-offs that require careful consideration. Managing your hand, your energy, and your presence on the board simultaneously is what gives Spirit Island its satisfying strategic depth.
The Invader system is one of the game's most distinctive design elements. Rather than a single advancing enemy, Invaders operate across a three-phase cycle of exploration, building, and ravaging. This system, driven by 15 Invader cards, creates a sense of escalating pressure that forces players to think several turns ahead. Fear cards earned through terror add beneficial effects that gradually shift the tide, rewarding aggressive and disruptive play. Blight cards impose harsh penalties as the island's health deteriorates, raising the stakes with every failed defense.
The game offers considerable flexibility in how you experience it visually. Three distinct map styles are available: a 3D textured option that gives the island a rich, realistic appearance from an isometric angle; a 3D classic style that echoes the tabletop presentation most longtime fans will recognize; and a 2D top-down view for players who prefer a clean, information-focused layout. Complementing all of this is an original musical score composed by Jean-Marc Giffin, where each Spirit carries its own musical identity that responds dynamically to how the game is unfolding.
