The Angel Cats have returned in Twin Shot Deluxe, a full remaster of the classic arcade platform shooter from Nitrome. This version rebuilds the experience from the ground up, offering players a chance to relive the glory days of carefree gaming with a modern touch. As the first title in the Nitrome Classics series, it sets the standard for bringing beloved older games to today's audience.
At its core, Twin Shot Deluxe asks you to defend your homeland using nothing but a bow and a steady aim. The campaign spans more than 200 levels across four distinct worlds, each populated with unique enemies, environmental challenges, and boss fights. The addition of a brand new Atlantis theme contributes 50 extra stages filled with fresh mechanics and threats to overcome. One of the standout new encounters is Colossus, a massive boss who is big, mean, and completely climbable, adding a vertical twist to the usual combat flow.
Multiplayer is a major focus in this remaster. Up to four players can join locally, either working together to clear stages or competing to see who comes out on top. The expanded player count makes chaotic fun a regular occurrence, especially when combined with the competitive Tag mode. In Tag mode, players shoot each other with arrows to steal a prized hat, turning every match into a frantic game of Angel Cat and Mouse.
Hats are more than just a cosmetic gimmick. Each piece of headwear comes with its own buff or special ability. The twisted hat allows you to fire arrows behind you, the old boot lets you bounce off enemy heads, and the Medusa Headdress can turn your character to stone. These abilities open up new strategies and encourage experimentation across the game's many levels.
The technical upgrades are immediately noticeable. Every sprite, animation, character, background, and menu has been redrawn to a higher standard. The game now runs at 60 frames per second, a huge jump from the original 20FPS. The aspect ratio has been updated to 16:9, which means you see significantly more of the action on screen. A brand new intro animatic and remastered ending illustrations round out the visual improvements.
Controls have been carefully reworked to feel familiar yet more responsive. The developers added improved air control, the ability to stop on a dime, coyote time for more forgiving jumps, and variable jump heights.
