What would you do if you had only sixty minutes to leave a lasting mark on an entire civilization? That is the central question driving You are Hope, a multiplayer role-playing survival experience developed by Dual Decade. Rooted in the concept of a beloved PC game originally created by Jason Rohrer, this version operates as its own independent world with its own community, balance changes, and exclusive content added by the development team.
The premise is deceptively simple. Every real-world minute equals one year inside the game, and every character ages from birth to a maximum of sixty years before passing on. You enter each life not knowing whether you will wake up as a newborn in the arms of another player or as a solitary young woman standing alone at the edge of a vast wilderness. What happens next depends entirely on you and the other people sharing the world at that moment.
When you spawn alone, survival becomes your only priority:
Build a fire immediately to protect yourself from the cold
Hunt and trap rabbits to gather meat for food and fur for clothing
Use sharp stones as early tools for processing materials
Locate fertile land where you can plant and grow crops
Establish a base that future generations can build upon
If you are fortunate enough to be born into an established settlement, you will find that generations of other players have already done the hard work of laying the foundation. Kitchens, farms, forges, and storage areas may already exist, stocked by people who may technically be your in-game grandparents or distant ancestors. In this kind of environment, the possibilities open up significantly. You might choose to take over a farming role, pursue a trade like blacksmithing or cooking, lead a hunting party after dangerous wildlife such as bears and wolves, or gather a group of friends to venture out and found a brand-new town somewhere in the wilderness.
The social dimension of You are Hope is what sets it apart from most survival games. Every player you encounter is either someone you can learn from or someone who will learn from you. More experienced players often step into mentoring roles naturally, teaching newer arrivals how to process food, craft tools, or manage livestock. At the same time, not every player contributes positively to the community, and part of the challenge is working together with others to manage disruptive behavior before it undermines everything the group has built.
When your life ends, the experience does not simply close. You are taken to a family tree view where you can watch your descendants continue living in the world you helped shape. Every child who survives to adulthood and every new generation that follows represents a direct result of the choices you made during your brief time alive. The optional Family Ties expansion deepens this experience by unlocking an observer mode and family chronicles, giving dedicated players a richer view of their legacy across time.
