The Tower Idle Tower Defense: Turtle Build Guide - Best Defense Strategy for Tier 1 & Early Game
How you construct your defence during the early game has a huge impact on how far you can get through The Tower Idle Tower Defense PC without spending all your premium resources. One of the most effective strategies that players sometimes stumble upon is what is known as the Turtle Build - a build that is focused on creating maximum survivability, having a lot of damage reduction and being able to hold your position while you generate passive income. Instead of going wide with your upgrades, you go deep with your protection. It may seem uncomplicated to create a Turtle Build at Tier 1, but there are specific choices that need to be made in a specific order to create a Turtle Build successfully.

What Is the Turtle Build
The Turtle Build is a defensive-focused play style that emphasizes upgrading durability and health regeneration, as well as reducing damage taken, instead of focusing on raw attack power. The theory behind the Turtle Build is simple: as long as your tower doesn’t collapse, you will continue to earn coinage at a fast rate. This coinage will continue to accumulate over time. Eventually, your defensive capabilities will allow you to survive through enough waves of enemies that you will catch up to their damage output by default.
Core Upgrades to Prioritize
The Turtle Build has a certain priority sequence during both run and the Workshop (before your run goes live). Getting this right is what distinguishes between runs that stall at wave 500 and those that can easily continue past wave 2,000.
In-Run Priority (Tier 1)
The first tier of priorities will occur in the run, beginning with Cash per Wave for getting your economy rolling quickly. Once you have established a stable source of coin flow, focus on Defense Absolute. This statistic is the most important from an early-game perspective, as it will cap the minimum damage that small enemies can do to your tower. After you have established a comfortable level of Absolute, stack the most Thorns % possible. Since you will primarily use it to deal damage during the Turtle phase, the more Thorns % (11%, 26%, 51% milestones) you have, the greater the scaling effects on your overall damage output will be in the later game. Therefore, after you have established peak levels of Cash per Kill for your coin flow to be self-sustaining, finish with stacking Defense %.
Workshop Pre-Run Setup
Before starting a Workshop, make sure to focus first on your economic stats, then immediately on your Defense Absolute number to reach at least 50 to minimize the damage a minimum enemy does during battle (the threshold at which it caps). Once that is set, divide up the remaining Workshop upgrades between Health and Thorn% and Defense% - all 3 should be about the same amount. Health and Health Regeneration are not as important as an overall top number in Workshop upgrades.
Workshop Upgrades as Turtle Core
The Turtle Build’s true foundation resides in Workshop rather than within a specific module - three Workshop upgrades define the Turtle Build strategy entirely.
Defense Absolute
The Defense Absolute is the no. 1 Workshop stat for the Turtle Build - level it to 50+ levels as your priority for a Workshop upgrade. After reaching that point, small enemies will be capped at 1 damage per hit. Therefore, whole categories of small enemies will have little to no impact on your tower during early and mid-run waves due to the 50+ level Australian Wattle. This upgrade alone has an enormous impact on how much pressure your tower actually takes from early and mid-run waves.
Thorns %
Thorns is your main source of damage as a Turtle player and rather than investing in attack upgrades, you allow enemies to hurt themselves attacking your tower. You need to build up your Thorns damage at milestone values: the first tick of noticeable damage occurs at 11%, a solid amount of damage returned happens at 26% and once you reach 51%, Thorns will pose an actual threat to the enemy's attrition via being hurt constantly by their own situations while trying to attack you.
Defense %
Your second Workshop priority is to get as much Defense % as possible after you have all your Absolute upgrades completed. Defense % is multiplicative with Defense Absolute, so when you have both together, they will yield a far higher damage reduction than having either on its own. You will therefore also want to make sure that you have a solid Defense % upgrade once your Defense Absolute base is completed to really compound the amount of damage that you can reduce, thereby making it more difficult for enemies to damage you as the games progress through the various phases using the attrition method.
Coins and Passive Income
A turtle build is only successful when your coin income meets your upgrade costs to continue upgrading your buildings. A lot of players focus on how to survive and forget about upgrading buildings that generate coins. If players do not invest in coin-generating upgrades throughout the run, they will hit a cap for upgrading buildings quicker than they would have liked, especially while moving between Tier 1 and Tier 2 through their mid-game transition.

Conclusion
The way to build a Turtle is to stack as many Defense Absolute, Thorns %, Defense % and Coin upgrades as you can for the first tier of your tower and for your early game to create a defensive loop that will continue to grow throughout the game. Defense Absolute neutralizes all of your chip damage from the enemies, Thorns punishes all enemies that touch your tower and Defense % locks this full damage reduction down so that all the early waves will seem easy. Be patient: don't touch Attack Speed or Multishot until the middle of your run, make your Health upgrades thin and let the Workshop do most of the work before your run begins. After you have this foundation, long runs will not feel like a grind anymore but will feel like an entire system working properly.
