How Cards Work in The Tower - Idle Tower Defense

Cards give your tower passive bonuses or special effects during runs. You equip them before the run starts, and they stay active throughout. The catch is, you only have a limited number of card slots, and so the choice of cards is critical at all stages.

Each card has 7 upgrade levels and requires duplicate copies to level up. Cards cost 20 gems each to pull from the gacha system. If you max out a card, it leaves the pool, making it slightly easier to pull other cards over time.

One important rule: during boss waves, your equipped cards lock in and cannot be changed until the boss is defeated. Outside of boss fights, you can swap cards mid-run, which gives you some flexibility if you know what you are doing.

Card Masteries are an advanced feature that unlocks at Tier 16 Wave 100 once you have maxed 30 cards. Do not worry about these until you are deep into the mid-game.

S Tier: The Cards Every Player Needs First

Enemy Balance: The Most Important Card in the Game

Enemy Balance increases how many enemies spawn during your runs. More enemies means more coins per minute and faster wave progression. This is the first card every player should be hunting for, regardless of which build they are running. Nothing else comes close to the impact this card has on early and mid-game progression. Get it, slot it, keep it equipped.

Free Upgrades: Makes Every Run More Efficient

Free Upgrades gives you a free Workshop upgrade after certain rounds. That means you spend less cash during runs and can push further before the run ends. It works in every build and every stage of the game. If Enemy Balance is your number one priority, Free Upgrades is a very close second.

Coins: More Passive Income Every Run

The Coins card increases the number of coins you earn per run, which in turn accelerates your Workshop upgrade outside of runs. In the early stages of the game, when coins matter, this card is vital. Level it up as fast as you can.

Attack Speed: More Shots, More Damage, More Lifesteal

Attack Speed increases how many shots your tower fires per second. More shots mean more damage but more importantly, it also means more Lifesteal triggers per second once you move into the Blender Build. This card works across all three main builds and stays relevant deep into the game.

A Tier: Strong Cards Worth Equipping for Specific Builds

Health and Plasma Cannon: Your Survival Core

It also greatly boosts your max HP, which is important for surviving hits from the Boss. Plasma Cannon is an underrated powerhouse that instantly hits the Boss for a percentage of its total health. Using it along with Thorns allows you to kill the Boss much faster, so it does not get a chance to hit your tower more than once.

Death Ray: Strong Mid Game Damage Card

Death Ray is a powerful damage card that becomes available after you pass Wave 250 across the first 10 tiers. Do not spend gems looking for it before you hit that requirement, because it will not appear in the pool. Once it unlocks, it is one of the best damage options in the game and is worth getting into your rotation.

B Tier: Economy and Speed: Maximizing Your Time

Wave Skip and Wave Accelerator are essential for mid-game players. They don't give you combat stats, but they make your runs faster, meaning more Coins Per Hour. Cash remains a solid B-tier card for early-to-mid waves, allowing you to max out your interest and health upgrades before the enemy damage scales too high.

C Tier: Extra Orbs: The Blender King

Extra Orbs is actually one of the most consistent ways to kill non-boss enemies. By using the Lab to adjust their range, you can set them to spin exactly where enemies get pushed by your Knockback. This creates a "Blender" effect that keeps your tower safe from everything except bosses and elites.

D Tier: Cards to Ignore for Now

Land Mine, Extra Extra Orbs, and Perk Option Quantity are the weakest cards in the current meta. Land Mine deals low damage in a limited area with no synergy in any popular build. Extra Extra Orbs is only relevant in very specific late-game setups. Perk Option Quantity gives you more perk choices, but the value is too low to justify a card slot over anything else on this list.

Which Cards to Run for Each Build

Build

Must Have Cards

Early Game (T1)

Enemy Balance, Coins, Health, Cash, Free Upgrades

Farming (Coins)

GT Bonus, BH Bonus, Critical Coin, Enemy Balance, Coins, Wave Accelerator

Pushing (Waves)

Health, Plasma Cannon, Attack Speed, Berserker, Energy Shield

When to Unlock More Card Slots

Start with unlocking enough slots to run Enemy Balance, Coins, and Free Upgrades together. That three-card combo covers economy and efficiency for the entire early game. Add Attack Speed as your fourth slot. From there, add slots as your gems allow, prioritising the cards relevant to whichever build you are currently running.

Level your Common cards to level 6 before spending gems on modules. Do not skip this step. The stat gains from levelled Common cards outperform early module investment by a wide margin.

Focus your early-game on Health and Defense % to survive initial tiers. Transition into the Blender meta by prioritizing Extra Orbs, Shockwave, and Knockback. As soon as the Ultimate Weapons unlock, switch GT Bonus, BH Bonus, and Critical Coin into the deck to boost your economy. The more slots and card levels you build, the faster your tower will progress, and its growth will be compounded faster than almost any other upgrade.
